Style SOS

So…most of the time when I’m thinking of non-life-essentials my brain is churning with all sorts of ideas for around the house, what will look good with what, paint colors, diy plans, you name it.  You know what I am not bursting with ideas for?

Clothes/shoes/accessories!!

I don’t know if it is the loooonnng winter or what, but I’m feeling like I have nothing to wear when I look in my drawers/go in the closet.  Maybe it’s just because I’ve been wearing the same stuff for 6+ mos, but almost everything I own feels incredibly frumpy when I put it on.  Ugh!

I’m not naturally talented at putting outfits together, which is not helping in the least.  I feel in many ways I need to fill in some basic outfit staples I have been lacking that would make it easier to mix and match.  Oh my, I’m a grown-up for goodness sake…I should have this together!  A lot of my clothes are garage sale finds that look great at the sale, but when I get them home and try them on, they don’t fit well or don’t go with anything.  I like to be thrifty but sometimes that doesn’t work out as well as I would like.

I’m always inspired by the outfit posts Rosie and Lisa put together, and the style tips on Maskara…and I’m looking for more!!  If you know of a good guide to building a wardrobe (or have written one yourself!) please let me know in the comments!  I would love to find other blogs with outfit posts or style series too.  Or, if you know of some great clothing sales going on, let me know too.  : )  I’m sending out a style SOS!

  1. Oh, I hear you, Liz! One of the biggest hurdles I'm always trying to overcome is waiting to find something of quality that I really like instead of something "meh" just because it's cheap and available. I've found Laura's SAHM style series to be helpful, and it's funny and relateable to boot- she also lists several online resources she likes. http://thisfelicitouslife.wordpress.com/style-the-sahm/
And if I have a piece of clothing I only wear one way (I wore colored cardigans only with white shirts for forever), it helps me to look for ideas on Pinterest (like "outfits with blue cardigan"). It's helped me get a lot more use out of my clothes!
Also, Audrey's blog is all about putting together a workable wardrobe and I appreciate that she links to brands that are budget friendly. http://www.puttingmetogether.com/
And I thought this post had some helpful tips on going through your closet. http://mynewfavoriteoutfit.blogspot.com/2013/11/utilizing-your-closet-use-it-or-lose-it.html
Hope some of this helps and sorry I inundated you with links!

    1. Oh I am SO grateful for the inundation!! This is exactly what I was hoping for! I am really excited to go check these links out!! Yay! And thank you for the tip on how to find inspiration for clothes I only wear one way...I have MANY of those and often I don’t have the time or vision to figure it out for myself. I will be Pinteresting my wardrobe like crazy!

  2. I second Lisa's comments! I'm seriously considering dropping some cash on a couple really lovely drapey tunics from ModCloth because I *know* I would wear them all the time and forever - so much better than buying something that will only last for a season or so! Twice and ThredUp are helpful when I *know* the brands are going to fit buuuuuut you can't always count on finding what you need because it's so hit-or-miss!

I really need to come up with a spring plan - my winter and fall worked well but I'm ready to throw a couple of newer, brighter things into the mix so that I'm not just wearing the same outfit without tights or leggings underneath!

    1. You know, I suppose that is really the key, finding things that you love and will wear all the time and getting those, even if they are a little more expensive. I need to get out of my mindset that cheap clothes are the best as I have a closet full of stuff that I mostly got the cheap way that is not working well for me. I have been reading through some of the links Lisa sent and I have been doing it totally the wrong way...I have lots of “statement” tops and very few basics that I can mix and match with a variety of bottoms. I’m going to go check out those tunics you mentioned...they sound pretty!
Oh yes please do a spring outfit post! It will still be wintry here for another month or so, but you’d better believe as soon as the temps get above 50 I will be wearing spring clothes. : )
      Thank you!!!!!

  3. I hear ya! I was just lamenting my same clothing situation. I've decided to just ignore how frumpy I am until it's spring and I can just wear comfy sundresses all day, every day. And then sleep in them and wear them the next day too. (Yep.)

    1. Oh believe me, I am tempted to do that...except for us here in the cold north it could be a long wait until sundress time and I am going a little batty over here. Just a little. : )

  4. It's hard to move from season to season. I follow tons of style bloggers and use pinterest for outfit inspiration. I've found that a wardrobe of neutrals and a few special pieces help me the most. I also wanted to share that I nominated you for a Liebster award. Check it out: http://www.thehonestroom.com/2014/03/liebster-award.html.
